c4 projects byder velkommen til et nyt år og til den første udstilling i vores 2023 udstillingsprogram: The Hospitality programme. Udover at være startskuddet på det nye år, markerer Hosting Relations også vores 10-års jubilæum som kunstnerdrevet udstillingssted.

Det overordnede tema for The Hospitality Programme er gæstfrihed og værtskab. At være gæstfri opfattes normalt som en positiv handling; en venlig velkomst og generøs indkvartering af den anden. Men ordet indebærer dog også en gensidig forventning; at gæsten indordner sig under værtens rammer og på den ene eller anden måde bidrager til værtens miljø eller sociale status. Ligeledes må værten forvente og respektere at gæsten ikke nødvendigvis følger værtens sociale eller kulturelle normer, men netop også er inviteret for at bidrage med noget nyt til værtens miljø.

Gæstfrihed har i alle år været en vigtig værdi for c4 projects som udstillingssted; det handler om at skabe plads, opbakning og anerkendelse til kunstværker og kunstnere. Vi bakker op med materielle ressourcer såsom lokaler, finansiel fondsstøtte, teknisk udstyr, osv. Men vores udstillingsprogrammer er kun mulige fordi vores gæster – kunstnere, kuratorer og andre samarbejdspartnere – takkede ja til vores invitation, har bidraget til vores aktiviteter og ikke mindst med immaterielle ressourcer som; netværk, kollegial respekt, accept og støtte.

En deling der har vist sig at være bæredygtig og ekspansiv, og som er kommet alle til gode – både kunstnere, publikum og c4 projects. I 10 år har vi sendt et hav af invitationer ud; samlet mennesker og objekter i vores lokaler på Vesterbro og taget gæstfriheden alvorligt. Det fejrer vi nu med gruppeudstillingen Hosting Relations.

I januar 2013 overtog c4 projects lokalerne på Dybbølsgade 60, fra det kunstnerdrevne udstillingssted Koh-i-noor, som havde opereret på adressen i 8 år forinden. For at fejre vores 10 års eksistens og i tone med årets tema har vi derfor fundet det oplagt at invitere nogle af kunstnerne/kuratorerne fra Koh-i-noor tilbage til at samarbejde om en udstilling i de lokaler, vi alle sammen kender så godt.

Fem kunstnere fra c4 projects og seks kunstnere fra Koh-i-noor vil vise værker, der alle forholder sig til årets tema og udstillingens titel: Hosting Relations.
De elleve inviterede kunstnere arbejder alle i vidt forskellige medier og med forskellige kunstneriske strategier, med denne gruppeudstilling har vi derfor ladet temaet stå åben for fortolkning så værkerne bliver diverse, og på en positiv måde åbner årets tema op med forskellige refleksioner over gæstfrihed og værtskab som begreb og handling.

Hosting Relations marks the beginning of a new year and a new program: The Hospitality Programme. And furthermore, the exhibition celebrates the 10-year anniversary of c4 projects as an artist run space. The Hospitality Programme is meant to expand and investigate the concept of hospitality.

To be hospitable is generally considered as a positive act of kindness; a welcoming and generous accommodation of another. But there is a paradox within the concept; it implies some form of mutual expectation between host and guest. The guest will have to conform to various rules or frameworks subsequently given by the host, contributing to the social sphere or status of the host. Likewise, the host must acknowledge and respect the autonomy of the guest, not necessarily following the cultural rules and norms of the host, keeping in mind that inviting the guest, came from a wish to stimulate the milieu in the first place.

Hospitality has always been a key value for c4 projects as an artist run exhibition platform, making a welcoming space for the artists and artworks, showing acknowledgment and support, while also backing this appreciation, with material resources such as financial funding, technical equipment etc. But our exhibition programs have only been made possible through our guests – all the artists, curators, and other collaborators who over the years have accepted our invitations, contributing to our activities with their work as well as immaterial resources such as network, peer acknowledgement, respect, and support.
A shared experienced that has proved to be sustainable and expansive, benefitting everyone, artist, audience and c4 projects alike.
For ten years we have been sending out numerous invitations, bringing people and objects together in our space, adapting and evolving a hospitable practice together. This is what we want to celebrate with Hosting Relations.

Ten years ago in January of 2013, c4 projects took over the space in Dybbølsgade 60, from the artist run exhibition space Koh-I-Noor who had been operating in the same rooms for eight years. To celebrate our ten years of existence and in keeping of this year’s theme we have invited some of the artists/curators from Koh-I-Noor back to exhibit with some of the artists from c4 projects, in the space we all know so well.

Five artists from c4 projects and six from Koh-I-Noor will show works all relating to hospitality and to the title of the show: Hosting Relations. The artists all work with different artistic strategies and within different medias, so we left the theme open to interpretation to get a diverse set of contributions, reflecting on hosting relations from all kinds of perspectives, opening or unpacking the term of hospitality as a concept and action.
