I 1830 forlod en tysk naturforsker ved navn Renous sit hus i San Fernando, Chile.
I huset efterlod han nogle larver og bad en pige om at holde dem under opsyn og fodre dem, han fortalte hende, at de måske kunne blive til sommerfugle. Dette blev rygtet gennem byen, og til sidst rådførte præsten og guvernøren sig med hinanden og fastslog at dette måtte være kætteri. Da Renous vendte tilbage til sit hus, blev han anholdt.
I september 1699 drog den tyskfødte naturalist og videnskabelige illustrator Maria Sibylla Merian til Surinam. Hun samlede og observerede levende insekter og skabte detaljerede tegninger til illustrationer af insekters metamorfiske processer. Hendes arbejde i Surinam var et usædvanligt og bemærkelsesværdigt stykke arbejde. Ikke desto mindre, blev hun latterliggjort i sin samtid, og hendes arbejde blev stort set ignoreret af hendes samtids forskere, fordi det ikke var udført på latin.
Alting er flydende og i en evig proces, alting forandres med tiden, skifter form, masse og udtryk alt efter omstændighedernes påvirkning. Det flytter sig og transformeres, nogen gange til en helt ugenkendelig form. De fleste processer er helt ude af vores kontrol; -det kan føles angstprovokerende, men omvendt kan det også være beroligende at vide at forandring altid er muligt, intet er statisk og for evigt.
Anna Bak har med sin installation i c4 projects, skabt et rum der på én gang virker trykkende, både mentalt og kropsligt. Men, det virker også til at være midt i en proces som endnu ikke er fuldendt, et metamorfisk sted hvor det sidste stadie stadig er ukendt.
Metamorphis arbejder med begreber som forandring, transformation, angst og udfrielse. Udstillingen griber fat i det cykliske som grundkår og ønsket om – eller forståelsen af – at alt der virker paralyseret og statisk kan ændre sig; at alting forandres og transformeres med tiden.

Som de fleste puppe-stadier er chrysalis-stadiet et hvor der er meget lidt bevægelse, men nogle sommerfuglepupper er i stand til bevæge de abdominale segmenter til at fremkalde en lyd og skræmme potentielle rovdyr væk.

Anna Bak (f. 1985, Danmark) er uddannet fra Det Fynske Kunstakademi i 2012, med et supplerende udvekslingsår på Montana State University i Bozeman, USA, Hvor til hun også modtog et Fulbright Foundations Scholarship. I 2014 blev hun accepteret som deltager på det post-akademiske research institut; Jan Van Eyck Academie i Mastricht (NL).
Bak arbejder i forskellige medier, primært med installation. Hun er interesseret i historier, der er baseret på natur/kultur konflikter og socio-kulturelle paradokser. Hun undersøger den måde, hvorpå folk observerer og forholder sig til naturen på et mere eksistentielt niveau, den voksende erkendelse af en civilisation.
I 2015 udgav hun bogen; “Wilderness Survival – A guide to the aesthetics of Survivalism”, en konceptuel kunstpublikation udgivet gennem det Hollandske forlag og udstillingssted Onomatopee.

In 1830 a German naturalist named Renous left his house in San Fernando, Chile. At the house he left behind some caterpillars under charge of a girl to feed, telling her that they might turn into butterflies. This was rumoured through the town, and at last the Padres and Governor consulted together, and agreed it must be some heresy. When Renous returned to his house, he was arrested.
In September 1699, the German-born naturalist and scientific illustrator Maria Sibylla Merian went to Suriname. She collected and observed living insects and created detailed drawings for illustrations of insect’s metamorphic processes. Her work in Suriname was an unusual and remarkable piece of work. Nevertheless, she became ridiculed in her time, and her fellow researchers largely ignored her work because it was not done in Latin.
Everything is fluid and in an eternal process, everything changes over time, changing shape, mass and expression depending on the impact of the circumstances. It moves and transforms, sometimes into an entirely unrecognizable form. Most processes are completely out of our control; It may feel anxiety-provoking, but on the other hand; it can also be soothing to know that change is always possible, nothing is static and forever.
Anna Bak has with her installation in c4 projects, created a room that is bothersome both mentally and psychically. But, it also seems to be in the middle of a process that has not yet been completed, a metamorphic place where the final stage is still unknown.
Metamorphis works with concepts such as change, transformation, fear and deliverance. The exhibition seizes the cyclical as the foundation and the desire for – or understanding of – that everything that seems paralyzed and static can change; that everything moves and transforms over time.

Like other types of pupae, the chrysalis stage is one in which there is little movement. However, some butterfly pupae are capable of moving the abdominal segments to produce sounds or to scare away potential predators.

Anna Bak (b. 1985, Denmark) graduated from The Funen Arts Academy in 2012, with an supplementing exchange year at Montana State University in Bozeman, USA, for this she also received The Fulbright Foundations Scholarship. Bak works in different medias, primarily with installation. She is interested in stories that are based on nature-culture conflicts and socio-cultural paradoxes. She examines the way people observe and relate to nature at a more existential level, the growing realization of a civilization.
In 2015 she published the book; “Wilderness Survival – A guide to the aesthetics of Survivalism”, a conceptual art publication published through the Dutch publishing house and exhibition space Onomatopee.
