BUTIK is a work in process – actions, materials and the room’s interior are the installation.
BUTIK is somewhere in between an exhibition, a workshop and a shop and acts as all three. The spot where c4 projects is located now, was actually originally a shop. Therefore, the installation BUTIK uses the location’s history to present identity as an ever-changing experience, and clothing is therefore produced and sold in the exhibition’s opening hours.
In BUTIK an edition of one size, unisex tops are sewn in unbleached linen canvas. The tops are folded and placed on a printing table while a square is manually printed with frame and squeegee.
Afterwards, the top is unfolded while the square is dissolved and spread out onto the clothing in an open formation which makes room for the body. Traces from the printed square is transferred from one piece of clothing to the other, so there is a clear link between them.
BUTIK is a sequel to the project LAILA UTI, which Winckelmann has worked on at Viborg Kunsthal and Augustiana Kunsthal throughout 2019-20. The shop LAILA BUTIK is located on Nørrebrogade across from The Assistens Cemetery. However, the signage lost the B and the K, why it is now called LAILA UTI. The exhibition was about loss, transition and new potential.
Clothing is practical but also a statement by the one wearing it. The exhibition BUTIK is about transformation, relativity of scales and negotiations.
Mette Winckelmann graduated from The Academy of Art and Design, Bratislava, Slovakia in 1996 - 1997 and The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1997 - 2003. Former solo exhibitions count Stop Calling Me Names at Gl. Holtegaard, 2018 and Come Undone at Overgaden, 2016. I 2019 Winckelmann received the Danish Arts Foundation’s three-year work grant and she is exhibited at The National Gallery of Denmark.

BUTIK fungerer i praksis som værksted, udstilling og butik, og fremstår som et sted imellem kategorier. I åbningstiden fremstilles, bearbejdes og sælges beklædning. c4 projects var oprindeligt et butikslokale, med butiksvindue og direkte indgang fra Dybbølsgade. Installationen BUTIK tager fat i stedets oprindelige funktion og nuværende identitet som en foranderlig størrelse.
I BUTIK syes en edition af onesize, unisex overdele i ubleget hørlærred. Den færdigsyede overdel foldes og placeres på trykbordet, hvorpå der manuelt trykkes et kvadrat med ramme og rakel. Efter trykprocessen foldes overdelen ud, hvorved det i udgangspunktet monumentale kvadrat, opløses og spredes ud over tøjets areal i en åben formation, der giver plads til en krop.
I trykprocessen overføres spor og mærker fra det påtrykte kvadrat i en beklædningsdel til den næste, hvorved sammenhæng og relationer delene imellem præciseres.
